Before organising transport in Northern Cyprus, separate two questions: Where will you travel regularly? And under what legal status will you drive? The answers matter before deciding to hire or buy a car.
Traffic drives on the left
The TRNC Ministry of Public Works and Transport explicitly states in its traffic information that vehicles travel on the left side of the road. If you are unfamiliar with left-hand traffic, be particularly careful at junctions, turns and roundabouts. Observe signs and speed limits, and allow extra time on unfamiliar roads.
Reading the Ministry’s traffic information document is a useful starting point before driving.
How long is a foreign driving licence valid?
There is no single answer for every person. Visitor, student, employee and resident categories may be treated differently. The TRNC Public Information Office’s official FAQs distinguish driving-licence rules for visitors from those for holders of residence, study or work permissions.
Do not assume that a foreign licence is valid in every circumstance or that one fixed number of days applies to everyone. Explain your travel and residence status to the responsible authority and ask for up-to-date guidance.
Before hiring or buying a vehicle
- Verify that your driving licence is recognised for your current status.
- Check the insurance policy, its coverage and the contract terms.
- Plan for child seats, seat belts and other safety needs.
- Check parking and the actual road conditions during typical travel hours.
- Photograph and record any existing damage when collecting a rental vehicle.
Public transport and everyday journeys
If you need to reach work, university or school at fixed times, distance on a map is not enough. Confirm current timetables and prices with the transport operator; do not assume schedules remain unchanged. When booking a taxi or private transfer, confirm both the total fare and the route in advance.
The key question for long-term residents
Before asking “Do I need a car?”, record how many days per week you travel, at what hours and to which districts. That gives you a more dependable basis for a decision than guessing fuel or car prices.
